Jack Be Nimble

I've been feeling really lucky lately that Jack loves his crib and never even tries to climb out of it.  One might even say that I brag about how easy Jack is in this respect.  I haven't even begun to research big boy beds (which my personality will obviously require of me before making such a purchase) because my sweet angel is not going to outgrow his crib anytime soon.

Well apparently Jack didn't want me to get too comfortable, because last night at 2:15am, he climbed out of his crib, landed with a thud, got up, and opened his bedroom door.  All with his ba (blankey) in hand.  I surprisingly didn't hear any of it until Jesse bolted out of bed and found Jack groggily shuffling toward our room.  Jack couldn't even open the doors in our house until about 2 months ago, I've never seen him even attempt to climb out of his crib, and he rarely wakes up in the middle of the night in the first place, so you can imagine my shock when he pulled this little stunt last night.

Once we checked him for injuries, Jesse laid him down in our bed, where he seemingly fell right back to sleep.  So we figured we'd just let him stay for the rest of the night.  Kinda sweet, actually.  Nope.  Within a few minutes, he was kicking around, scratching the sheets, and keeping all three of us awake.  OK, this wasn't gonna work.  Back to the crib for the Bean.  After a few failed attempts to get him to go back to bed in his crib, the final one ending in him climbing out for a second time, we brought his mattress into our room and let him sleep on the floor by our closet.  He made some weak protests to "lay in the big one," but we all eventually fell asleep.  Mind you this whole ordeal lasted nearly 3 1/2 hours, so the Debban clan is running on fumes today. At least the big kids are.  Jack seemed in perfectly high spirits this morning and was enthusiastically talking about climbing out of his crib and opening his door and daddy coming to get him.  Oh, what fun!

I was worried that he would be really tired and cranky for preschool today, but his teacher said he did great.  He was having a grand old time playing in the sand when I came to pick him up.  Before putting him down for his nap, I explained that he can't climb out of his crib anymore because it's dangerous and he could get big ouchies.  He said OK, but I'm still half expecting to hear another thud soon.

So I guess it's the end of that nice secure feeling of knowing Jack is safe in his crib, the only place where he can't get into trouble.  And time to start my research for his first big boy bed...
